Our team has been running a series of hackathons across the Globe at large developer events. This week marks the start of a hackathon at Angular Connect conference in London. This event is run by the community with special guests from Google engineering team to talk about the Angular framework and future vision of Angular 2.

Jeremy Thake and Richard DiZerega, our podcast hosts, will be there with the help of our technical writing team in Redmond and local Developer Experience (DX) team in the UK.

The teams will get a presentation from experts from Redmond at 18:30 this Tuesday in London. From there they can stay in the room with all the teams and get coding! They will have the help of all the experts to help build their solutions before recording their final video presentation.

    Your vote counts!

We are running a devpost.com site to allow participating teams to submit their YouTube demos pitching their creations for you…the global public to vote on. You will be able to vote for your favorite hack from Friday at 12:00 GMT (8:00 EST) until 17:00 GMT (13:00 EST).

Along with the sway of public vote, we also have some amazing judges to help pick the final winning team. We are very lucky to have Brad Green (@bradleygreen) and Igor Minar (@igorminar) from the Google engineering team behind the Angular framework as judges.

The winning team members will each win an Xbox One and bragging rights.

What can you expect from the teams?

Angular Connect brings web developers from all over Europe, mostly with an open source web developer background. So we are expecting to see a lot of Office web add-ins built using the Angular framework. The major benefit of the new Office web add-in model is that it supports any html/javascript stack, so web developers can up and running very easily. The Office 365 APIs are standard oData/oAuth RESTful APIs which means that Angular developers can call them very easily in their service layer.

The Yeoman generator (generator-office), available on NPM, will get them started in minutes and building out their scenarios connecting to our Office 365 APIs and Office.js APIs. The generator makes it very easy, by creating the necessary scaffolding leveraging the frameworks like bower.io to pull down the libraries like Angular, AngularUI and Office UI Fabric. The generator currently generates an Angular 1.x version of the scaffolding but work is going to be underway shortly to support a Angular 2.x version. For more information on Angular please visit https://angularjs.org/.

Much like the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon in San Francisco, we will do a follow up blog post to showcase what was built by the competing teams. This really helps to showcase the power of the Office developer platform and hopefully inspire you to get on board!

It’s great to see so many web developers stepping up to the plate and trying the Office developer platform! If you want to keep in the loop follow tags #hack #office365dev on Twitter.
