This week's episode of Data Exposed welcomes Vin Yu to the show! Vin is a PM in the SQL Server engineering group focusing on SQL Server on Linux, and today he is in the studio to talk about and demo application capability between SQL Server on Windows and Linux.

No slides, all demo in this show as Vin begins by showing a web application running against SQL Server on Windows. The application takes advantage of several key features of SQL Server 2016 including the JSON data type, Temporal, and Dynamic Data Masking. To show that SQL Server on Linux is the same SQL Server that is running anywhere, Vin opens his application and simply changes the connection string to point to SQL Server running on a Linux Docker instance instead of the SQL Server running on Windows. He fires up the application, and shows that his application continues to run with no changes. Everything works, including Temporal and Dynamic Data Masking.

At the [05:10] mark Vin shows a second demo in which is just as cool. The second demo Vin shows off is that of the well-known Bootcamp app written in Python using the Django framework. It is an enterprise social network for companies. In this awesome demo, the application is initially running against a PostgresSQL database, but similar to the first demo, Vin simply changes the connection string to run against his SQL Server on Linux instance, runs a schema migration, and the application continues to run. Truly awesome.

Finally, at the [11:25] mark, it is a pleasure to Skype in Spenser and Patrick, the creators of Project Nami, which is a WordPress running on SQL Server. Patrick and Spenser spend the remaining 12 minutes showing us a site called The Feed, which is WordPress running on Project Nami, and how they went about getting WordPress to run on SQL Server, and even better, show us Project Nami running on SQL Server on Linux! So Cool!

Great show and great work showcasing app compatibility!
