HOW TO: Adding a Continent Slicer to Power BI Reports

After building Power BI reports for many customers over the past couple years, one thing is certain – people love maps. Nearly every organization I support operates at a global scale, with offices (or business) spanning the world. I’ve recently starting using this small trick to add a Continent slicer to reports to allow for easier viewing and consumption of map data.

For this example, I used the “Map of Countries Visited” report from my 12 Days of Dashboard series located here and the following steps to add the Continent slicer.

Step 1: Find your favorite country/continent list. I selected the list from http://www.worldatlas.com/cntycont.htm and stored it in an Excel spreadsheet for this sample. You could leverage the live web page source to remain up-to-date, but the spreadsheet (or data stored in your reporting warehouse) is often sufficient.

Step 2. After creating your data source in step 1, add it to your data model in Power BI that contains country data. Note: Verify that the relationship was detected between the country column in your existing report and the country column in the new country/continent mapping source.

Step 3: Once the relationship is set, you can drag the Continent field into your report and change it to a slicer. It is very simple and a nice addition to map data.

In this example, you’ll notice the (Blank) value in the continent list. Since the world country list is debatable, countries that are not included in the mapping appear as (Blank).

    Thanks,
