I appreciate any suggestions for doing lists in Sharepoint with many-to-many relationships.

Using a third list to do the connection seems cumbersome but if that's the only way, I guess I'll do it that way.

I have read that using look-ups with multi-values also does this in some way but I don't understand how it works in the reverse direction. I understand Sharepoint creates invisible connector lists in this case but is there a way to access the "invisible" list?

Here's the case: I have a list of "gaps" and a list of "initiatives" and I want a many-to-many relationship between them that allows me to see a "gap" and the related "initiatives" that will address it as well as an "initiative" and the related "gaps" that it will address.
